A Black and White Tablescape with a Beautiful Pop of Pink

Ok, doesn’t this black and white tablescape remind you of Beetlejuice? That’s the first thing our guest said when he walked in the door the other night! I don’t even know the movie, and I didn’t mean it to be of course, but the stripes are pretty stripey!

Instead of being a horror thing, though, I think it’s a fun – and lovely – contrast of the sharp black and white, with that pop of bright pink flowers.

I suppose you could use this concept for a Halloween tablescape, but maybe change the flowers to something a little more season-appropriate!

Beautiful Pink Roses for the Centerpiece

This is the time of year when our roses bloom like there’s no tomorrow. Of course, there IS a tomorrow – they bloom strong all summer. But they go crazy at the beginning, and I can fill baskets and baskets if I wanted to.

I love these two varieties, Pearly Gates and David Austin’s Gertrude Jekyll.

I had settled on silver for this table, so I just popped them into two big silver bowls and called them good. They’re so beautiful on their own, that they didn’t need anything else with them.

The Place Setting for the Black and White Tablescape

The place setting is a mix of some pieces I don’t use very often and some pieces I use every day. The matte black chargers are so fun. I always wish they were chalkboard, but they’re just regular plastic. I don’t use them too often, but I love them when I do.

The white dinner plates have been used practically every night for the last 30 years! But that just proves their versatility and ability to go with anything.

I used two different patterns for the salad plates. One year for the state fair table setting competition, I bought two place settings of the china in the pattern above. They also had this lovely accent plate in the pattern below, and I couldn’t pass them up. State Fair Tablescape Competition #1 – Planning

I only have two of each, though, so I always have to (get to) mix them up on the table.

Flatware & Glassware

I was feeling fancy, so out came my Rose Point sterling. I love this pattern, and as you’ve heard me say many times if you’ve been around a while, my mom started it for me in my hope chest when I was 15 years old. She and I both added to it over the years.

I feel like I take this glasses picture all the time, only with different flowers behind it! I actually DO, because I use them almost every night too! The water glasses are really highballs that I’ve had for years and years – even longer than the plates!

The wine glasses are Riedels – these are the pinot shape.

Black Candle Holders for Our Black and White Tablescape

These black candle holders are so fun. I got them for the Harvest Elegance dinner party plan, back when I was doing those. I’d had my eye on these candlesticks for quite a while, and that table was the perfect place for them.

I really like them here, too. They give the black and white tablescape a bit more of a casual feel than if I’d used silver.

Napkins and Rings

That only leaves the napkins and napkin rings, and these are another combination of old and new. (Well, relatively new!) The napkins are ancient. I think I got them when I lived in Minneapolis back in the 90s. But they’re still lovely and have held up really well, since we use them really often too.

The rings were a wedding present – nine years ago now!

Extra Flowers?

After i finished, and stood back to look at my black and white tablescape, I thought it might need a bit of color on the plates. So I ran back out to the garden and cut four little buds for the napkin rings. I took this overhead shot, and realized that extra pop of pink wasn’t really the look I was going for after all. So I took them out again.
