Welcome to the summer red table setting! If you’ve just come over from The Corner of Plaid & Paisley, I’m so glad you’re here! I’m sure you loved Ann’s darling take on summer cherries! Both Ann’s table and mine are part of the Summer Tablescape Blog Hop hosted by the lovely Rita at Panoply! She’s an excellent host, and brings us this wonderful inspiration several times a year. I’m honored to be part of it again this season. Be sure to check out all the other beautiful summer tablescapes at the end of this post.

Red Roses for a Beautiful Red Table Setting

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but summer to me means roses! I grew up in a house with a beautiful rose garden, and we have lots of roses in my current garden too! I love them all, but these red ones are so natural and summery looking. Plus they grow in bunches, so they’re really easy to use in centerpieces.

I just cut several bunches and put them into this simple silver bowl. I didn’t even put a tape grid or anything over it – just made a bouquet in my hand, and placed them in there.

They’re climbers, and you can see in the picture below, the lovely way they arch over our red table setting.

Even though we’re right out here in the front yard, it’s so romantic! It actually reminds me of the table in the penguin dance scene in Mary Poppins, if you remember that movie! I’m not exactly sure why … maybe just the cafe table and the overhanging greenery.

I actually love setting a table in the front yard! I talked to more of my neighbors in that hour than I have the whole couple months before!

But on to the table!

Starting with the Tablecloth

When I looked up this little tablecloth, I found them listed as “table throws.” They’re usually just big enough to cover a little cafe table like ours. It’s a fun size, and great for picnics too!

This one came from a family friend years ago, I think. I love the natural linen color especially, because it plays so nicely with the middle trim on the black-rimmed accent plate. The trim is really silver, but it has a little champagne cast to it, that I love.

The Red Table Setting Plates

As I’m sure you noticed, this is another mix and match salad plate table. I only have two of each variety, but if you mix them up, it looks like you planned it, and adds a fun touch to the formality. Here’s a setting with the regular salad plate.

I got this set for one of my state fair tablescape entries a while back, and I’ve been able to use them a lot since. They’re just perfect for adding a bit of sophistication to a plain white plate. Same with the silver chargers. These are are some of my favorites – and M&T readers’ favorites too. They’re so light and easy care, not to mention inexpensive. But they definitely dress up any tablescape.

Sticking with Silver to Set Off the Red Table Setting

Since I went with the silver edged china and the silver charger, I figured I’d keep it all silver to set off the bright red. This is my hope chest silver that I’ve had since I was 15. I have a lot more of it now, and I’ve always loved it. It’s a popular pattern – people are always telling me that it was their wedding silver!

It’s perfect for this table too, with its delicate rose design.

Simple Celebratory Glassware

Since a little al fresco summer dinner party is always a bit celebrational, I went with champagne glasses. These are simple and classic, and I like them because they don’t detract at all from the rest of the setting.

Plus, you can see the roses through them!

Red Napkins for a Red Table Setting

And that just leaves us with the red napkins, which really make this table setting red. Just that little extra touch of color really makes it. And I love the way they drape over the table – so elegant.

Oh, I forgot to mention the little roses I put onto the regular salad plates. They’re not quite as fancy as the black-rimmed ones, so I thought they needed a little something. We’ll have the ladies sit at those seats!

So That’s Our Red Table Setting!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this outdoor taste of summer with all the red roses!

    1. Thanks Lynne – I’m so glad you like it. You’re right about the flowers. They’re almost the best part of summer! Lovely to hop with you too – hope you have a great season till next time!

  7. Barbara, your table displays such elegance. I love how you featured the roses and your choice of exqusite dinnerware, stemware, glassware and table linens didn’t distract from the beauty of the roses on the table and in your front yard. I am so in love with your flatware. So incredibly pretty. The setting in the front yard is like a park, being the pathway behind your shrubs seem to lead to your table. So inviting. I love the subtle elegance. Have a great summer–invite the neighbors.

    1. Haha – yes, I’ll definitely invite the neighbors! 🙂 That’s what dinner parties are all about, right? I’m thinking Block Party!! I hadn’t thought about the sidewalk leading to the table, but you’re right – it does look like that! Thanks so much for your sweet comments! I hope you have a great summer too!

  8. Good Morning Barbara! Red with silver is such a classic combination for anytime of year! Love your abundance of roses and pops of red from your napkins. You even managed to add a pop of red from the car parked through the trees. 😊 I love the pretty stitching and details on your table throw too! Once again, it’s a treat to join you at the table and hop with you. Wishing you a wonderful summer. 🌹❤️

    1. Haha! Yes, I loved the red car – a perfect match! One of the unexpected joys of living in the city. It’s always lovely hopping with you too! Hope your summer is wonderful!

  9. Barbara, red is dramatic and beautiful! Your roses are gorgeous and are quite the showstopper on your table. I am impressed with your hope chest silver, and to start collecting at 15 is amazing. I love the table topper with its pretty handwork. The plate stacks and the champagne glasses complete your beautiful alfresco setting. How fun that you chatted with your neighbors while setting up your table. It is a treat to visit one of your tables. Happy Summer!

    1. Thanks so much Pam! I was really so proud of my hope chest when I got it, even though none of my friends even knew what one was! My Dad got it for me, and he may not have been quite up with the times! But the sentiment was the sweetest, and I had such fun adding to it over the years until I actually did get married! (Not really THAT many years, now that I think about it, but it seemed like a lot back then!) These days, it holds all the clothes that I’m going to get back into someday! 🤣 Thanks so much for stopping over, and hope you have a wonderful summer!

  10. Barbara, there is something regal about using red and silver. The flatware is very elegant. The red roses are show stoppers. I adore rises7, however ai only have a few here and there. How special to set a table in the front and chat with neighbors. Your plate stack is lovely with a mix and match look. The table throw is so pretty on your bistro table. A pleasure hopping along with you. Happy summer.

    1. Hi Linda! It really was fun to chat with everyone while I was setting the table – makes it a much more social activity than usual! Thanks for your sweet comments, and for stopping by – I always love sharing a hop with you! Hope you have a great summer too!

  11. I think it’s super-cool you have such a pretty setting in your front yard. The climbing roses are pretty, and I can see the resemblance between your table and the scene in Mary Poppins! I love your centerpiece so much, and your napkins complement them so well. Your table is lovely! The plate stacks are elegant and pretty. Happy summer!

    1. Thanks so much Ricki Jill! I’m glad you could see the movie resemblance – Mary Poppins was a formative influence when I was a kid! It’s always lovely hopping with you! Hope you have a great summer too!

  12. What a special garden setting for your summer tablescape, Barbara! I’m so jealous of the abundance of roses you have to cut from! I’m still a bit stingy in cutting from my garden beyond spring blooms, as I’m still nurturing a young cottage garden. I love the fact that you engaged with your neighbors while creating this. The table topper is a beauty – I can see the varied hand work in the stitching decorating it. We love finding those kinds of linens for our shop booths. Your table has an elevated look to it with your stems and plate stack, yet the outdoor setting invites a relaxed and casual setting. It’s a place I’d love sitting. I’m one of those who’d be talking with all the neighbors who happened by. Better set up a bar cart on the side just in case!
Thanks so much for bringing summer joy of garden and table to our hop! Happy summer!

    1. Now THERE’S an idea – why didn’t I think of a bar cart before?! Maybe we’ll start our block party early! Thanks so much for putting this excellent hop together, Rita! I’m so happy to be part of it!

  13. Hi – from what I could see, your table looks lovely. Sadly your pop up (get your free table setting diagram) blocked most of your post and I could not delete it

    1. Oh I’m so sorry Patti! I’ve been having trouble with that pop up but I thought it had been fixed! It seems to be a worse problem on a tablet. I’ll get onto the provider again – thanks for letting me know! And thanks for stopping by! I hope you have a lovely summer!

  14. Barbara, the photographs of this table are just breathtaking. Your rose bouquet is gorgeous. The deep red touches are so striking with the elegant china and silver pieces. Your outdoor setting creates the most magical setting. I hope that you have a wonderful summer!

    1. Shannon you’re so sweet – thank you! (You know how hard I’ve been working on my photography.) It still kind of amazes me how the magic can show up even right there on the front lawn! Nothing like a set table, right? Thanks so much for stopping over, and hope you have a lovely summer!

  15. Oh Barbara, your rosy tablescape is just stunning–what a gorgeous bouquet of beautiful blooms! I adore your elegant style. Happy summer, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction

  16. Such stunning outdoor elegance. You really got my heart when you mentioned your roses. My late husband and I used to grow roses at our old house. Because we were often in England, we chose to grow English roses. The fragrance was phenomenal. I loved cutting bouquets to bring indoors. I don’t think there’s a better centerpiece than fragrant roses. I no longer grow them because I no longer live on a plot of land like we had years ago. I tried to grow them in a container once, and I was successful, but the roses were small and I decided to give that up and just stick with my memory. This is beautiful. I’m particularly in love with your flatware.

    1. Oh those are such wonderful memories to have Pattie! English roses, especially David Austin, and some of my very favorites! I’m glad you like the silverware – I still love it after all these years! Hope you have a lovely summer until next time!

  17. Barbara, I love that you set your beautiful table up in the front yard under your climbing roses! How fun to talk to all the neighbors as you are creating such a lovely setting. Your fabulous chargers drew me into the details with your elegant silverware and the embroidered throw as a tablecloth. It all looks wonderful, champagne worthy for sure!! It is a pleasure to hop with you, enjoy your summer!🌹

    1. Ha – yes! Setting tables outside sure is a social occasion! Some day I should set a great long table and invite everyone who stops by to actually sit down! Thanks so much for stopping by Ann – I love these hops! Happy Summer!
