Channeling Italy With A Beautiful Red and Yellow Tablescape

This bright red and yellow tablescape was the setting the other day for a wonderful Italian-themed dinner!

We don’t really have a “supper club,” but every once in a while a group of us get together and all bring part of the menu that matches whatever our theme is. For this one, it was Italian.

We had lasagna, focaccia, a delicious green salad with Italian dressing, and topped it all off with luscious cannoli and wine-drenched fruit. Mmmmmmmm!

Since it was at our house this time, my main job was to set the table.

Italian Table Inspiration

I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted my table to look like, so I went to Pinterest and Google for inspiration. And just for the record, pretty much any kind of table can be Italian! There were beautiful neutral ones with delicate white flowers, blue patterns with lemons, settings on tablecloths that looked like Italian flags, and everything in between.

So I figured I’d go for a bright red and yellow tablescape that reminded me of the flowers I saw when I was in the fields of Italy. (That was a long time ago – I imagine they still have fields of sunflowers.)

Red and Yellow Tablescape Flowers

These yellow sunflowers were so pretty, and felt casually Italian! Red carnations and roses looked good with them, so I grabbed some bright red along with my bright yellow.

I used the method I often do for flower centerpieces. I just line up my vases, then put my various different kinds of flowers into them one at a time, until they’re all done! It’s super easy and looks pretty down the middle of the table.

For some more Italian flair, I added a few faux olive branches to the flower arrangements. The green was a nice casual touch, and the olives added a little more Italian Summer to our red and yellow tablescape.

Lots of Red on the Red and Yellow Tablescape

Since lasagna was on the menu, I knew I wanted to use my red tablecloth. (I just find that a white tablecloth doesn’t go well with tomatoes!) I’ve had this one forever, and it really does a great job of having just enough pattern to be interesting, and not enough to be overpowering.

Ralph Lauren doesn’t make this style anymore, but every once in a while you can find one on Etsy or Ebay. In the meantime, there are lots of others that’ll give you the same look. Check out the Boutique below.

The red napkins tie the plate stack to the table, and there you are!

Gold is Almost Yellow …

Besides red, the only other real color on the table is the gold of chargers, flatware, napkin rings, and candle holders. It played well with the yellow flowers, and the overall red and yellow vibe of the table held up well.

The Red and Yellow Place Setting

Add in white plates and sparkly glassware, and you’ve got yourself a bright, fun, cohesive yet casual Italian-style tablescape!

To Balance or Not To Balance – I didn’t even think to ask the question!

We had an uneven number of people at this dinner party, and I didn’t even realize until I looked at the pictures, that I should probably have put the extra place setting in the middle of the far side, instead of at the end of the table. That would have made it a more balanced look!

But oh well – we all had fun even if there was a big space in there!

What Do You Think of the Casual Italian Red and Yellow Tablescape?

Have you ever set a bright red and yellow tablescape? Even one that’s not at a crazy angle?!

Actually, I just remembered that I did set a red and yellow tablescape before – last summer. Even though it had a lot of the same elements, it had a very different look. You can read about that one here: A Red and Yellow Table Setting – Soft Beautiful and Relaxed

  1. The flowers are breathtaking!! I can imagine this in a cozy family-run Italian restaurant! Add the aroma and that’s all I’d need. It’s nice to be reminded that red isn’t restricted to holidays. I always seem to like Ralph Lauren tablecloths though I only have their placemats.
