Stop #20 – Tea in the Netherlands
The next destination of Tessa Rose, (as our Traveling Teacup has been named by her hosts,) is 3700 miles across the Atlantic!
All the way to the Netherlands in Europe!
Her host, Martine, lives in the town of Ermelo – about an hour southeast of Amsterdam. She took Tessa Rose on a picnic to a lovely park with a lot of history, including a beautiful castle!
Staverden Castle
Here’s Martine to tell us about their outing.
It was lovely having tea at Staverden castle in Ermelo this weekend.
I just love this view! It’s so quintessentially Dutch, like an old master painting!
Traditional Treats
The cakes with pink icing are called ‘roze koeken’ (pink cakes).
These are often eaten in the Netherlands. They are consisting of a
flat cake with a pink layer of fondant.
The cookies are ‘stroopwafels’, a Dutch invention and our national
culinary pride. The product consists of two round dough wafer halves,
with diamond pattern, between which sweet syrup is applied. Simple but
sweet.
For savory we had spiral-shaped pretzels with paprika flavor. We call
them ‘wokkels’.
And Beautiful Linens
The tea set and linens are designed by Miss Blackbirdy aka illustrator
Merel Boers, also of Dutch origin. So after all a very Dutch tea for
our American guest.
A Huge Thank You to Martine!
What a wonderful and exciting trip for our Traveling Teacup! Thank you so much Martine, for giving her and us a little peek into your beautiful country!

Lovely! Being Dutch myself, though living in a different area than Ermelo, I’m pleased to see the Traveling Teacup here in The Netherlands! Have a great time!

This is a special tea table in a beautiful setting. Lovely linens and dishes.
Thanks, for sharing
Barbara Leone says
Hi Bonnie! Isn’t that wonderful?! The pictures are so European! 🙂 Thanks so much for following along with our Traveling Teacup, and hope your weekend is lovely!
Patricia Diana says
I am so envious of Tessa Rose, I love the Netherlands. Now, I would go back anytime. Maybe you could take her some year to Kinderdijk to have tea by the windmills. The scenery is gorgeous there and feels like another world.
The pastries are really good in the Netherlands, especially the strudel. I was in the Riks for lunch one day and had their famous cake, called Princess Cake, it is in the shape of a Dome and covered with pink marzipan. Absolutely divine and the pink would complement Tessa Rose.
Maybe Tessa will visit other areas of Netherlands while she is overseas.
Barbara Leone says
Hi Patricia Diana! It sounds like you have beautiful – and delicious – memories of the Netherlands! It’s been a long time since I’ve been there, but I loved it.
It would be so fun to try a Princess Cake with TR – a perfect combination! I think Martinie’s photos are as close as I’m going to get for a while though! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and for subscribing! I’m so happy you joined us! Take care till next time!

Finally finding time to read this all the way through and especially enjoyed the reminder of stroopwafels. We used to get them as a treat for the kids (so Bob and I could eat the leftovers), but we haven’t gotten them in quite some time. I will have to see if we can still get them at Trader Joes. Thanks for the few minutes of ‘vacation’ to the Netherlands!
Barbara Leone says
Hi! I’ve got stroopwafels on my shopping list too – I hope TJs does have them! 🙂 I loved Martine’s visit with TR, it felt like a vacation to me too! Happy Friday, and hope you guys have a great weekend over there!
Michele M. says
What an amazing journey to go so far for this lovely teatime!
That castle is so unique and beautiful.
Barbara Leone says
Hi Michele – it really is a beautiful castle! It looks cozy in a castle-y way, doesn’t it? If we ever have a Traveling Teacup Host Reunion, we should have it in the Netherlands, don’t you think? We could write it off as a business expense … ! 😉 Hope you’re doing ok and that you have a nice peaceful weekend!
Kim says
Wow – that is quite the achievement for a tea cup! Across the Atlantic for tea in front of a Dutch castle complete with Dutch linens. Looks like a beautiful place, and the cakes and cookies look scrumptious What fun for TR!
Barbara Leone says
Hi Kim! It really is! I was surprised that it wasn’t actually the longest distance though – you’d think the ocean would be bigger! 🙂 I’m so glad Martine wanted to host – it’s such a fun trip for us to follow! Hope you have a lovely weekend, my fellow teacup host! Take care up there!
Joanne says
What a perfect setting for a cup of tea!! That looks like such a beautiful castle.
Barbara Leone says
I did a little research on the castle, and it looks like it’s in the middle of some lovely grounds! I’d love to take a trip there myself – Martine has whetted my appetite with her wonderful photos! Thanks so much for stopping by Joanne. Hope you have a great weekend!
Pam Richardson says
Barbara, wow Tessa Rose made it all the way across the Atlantic to the Netherlands! She looks beautiful in the park setting in front of a castle! I love this fabulous idea of the traveling teacup. Happy Wednesday!
Barbara Leone says
Pam you are the sweetest! Thank you for always being here and sharing Tessa Rose’s travels! I hope you have a lovely weekend my friend!
HappyHauteHome says
How exciting for Tessa! I have traveled and seen a great part of Europe but still have to get to the Netherlands. Now, I want to go more than ever! Love stroopwafels too 🙂 We buy them quite often!
Barbara Leone says
Denise! It’s been a long time since I’ve been anywhere in Europe, so if you decide to make a trip, give me a call – I’m sure you’d be needing some extra company on a journey to the Netherlands! 🙂 I’ll be sure to pack the stroopwafels!
I’m ridiculously excited that it’s Friday tonight, and I’m heading for a glass of wine right now! Here’s to a lovely weekend on both sides of the country! 🙂
Sandra W Magle says
How very lovely. The setting, the table, and the guest. Such a journey is worth of such a lovely afternoon tea. Thoroughly enjoyed this post! Sandi
Barbara Leone says
Hi Sandi! It’s that gorgeous?! I definitely have another spot to add to my itinerary when we can travel again! So glad you stopped by – hope you have a great week!
Linda Johnston says
The sweets in the Netherlands are delicious! So happy to see the lovely setting the Traveling Teacup visited. Reminds me of years ago we lived in N Germany we would drive across the border for the day including afternoon tea! Thank you for sharing your trip! Linda
Barbara Leone says
Wow – living in Germany would be fun, and getting to visit the Netherlands would be such an excellent day trip! 🙂 I’d love to try some of those delicacies too – maybe I’ll follow the Traveling Teacup’s footsteps someday! It’ll be great when she visits you in the spring! Happy Tuesday!
