Stop #20 – Tea in the Netherlands

The next destination of Tessa Rose, (as our Traveling Teacup has been named by her hosts,) is 3700 miles across the Atlantic!

All the way to the Netherlands in Europe!

US and Europe map with Traveling Teacup's routes

Her host, Martine, lives in the town of Ermelo – about an hour southeast of Amsterdam. She took Tessa Rose on a picnic to a lovely park with a lot of history, including a beautiful castle!

Staverden Castle

Here’s Martine to tell us about their outing.

It was lovely having tea at Staverden castle in Ermelo this weekend.

I just love this view! It’s so quintessentially Dutch, like an old master painting!

Traditional Treats

The cakes with pink icing are called ‘roze koeken’ (pink cakes).
These are often eaten in the Netherlands. They are consisting of a
flat cake with a pink layer of fondant.

The cookies are ‘stroopwafels’, a Dutch invention and our national
culinary pride. The product consists of two round dough wafer halves,
with diamond pattern, between which sweet syrup is applied. Simple but
sweet.

For savory we had spiral-shaped pretzels with paprika flavor. We call
them ‘wokkels’.

And Beautiful Linens

The tea set and linens are designed by Miss Blackbirdy aka illustrator
Merel Boers, also of Dutch origin. So after all a very Dutch tea for
our American guest.

A Huge Thank You to Martine!

What a wonderful and exciting trip for our Traveling Teacup! Thank you so much Martine, for giving her and us a little peek into your beautiful country!

I am so envious of Tessa Rose, I love the Netherlands. Now, I would go back anytime. Maybe you could take her some year to Kinderdijk to have tea by the windmills. The scenery is gorgeous there and feels like another world.

The pastries are really good in the Netherlands, especially the strudel. I was in the Riks for lunch one day and had their famous cake, called Princess Cake, it is in the shape of a Dome and covered with pink marzipan. Absolutely divine and the pink would complement Tessa Rose.

Maybe Tessa will visit other areas of Netherlands while she is overseas.

Hi Patricia Diana! It sounds like you have beautiful – and delicious – memories of the Netherlands! It’s been a long time since I’ve been there, but I loved it.

It would be so fun to try a Princess Cake with TR – a perfect combination! I think Martinie’s photos are as close as I’m going to get for a while though! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by and for subscribing! I’m so happy you joined us! Take care till next time!

Finally finding time to read this all the way through and especially enjoyed the reminder of stroopwafels. We used to get them as a treat for the kids (so Bob and I could eat the leftovers), but we haven’t gotten them in quite some time. I will have to see if we can still get them at Trader Joes. Thanks for the few minutes of ‘vacation’ to the Netherlands!

Hi! I’ve got stroopwafels on my shopping list too – I hope TJs does have them! 🙂 I loved Martine’s visit with TR, it felt like a vacation to me too! Happy Friday, and hope you guys have a great weekend over there!

Hi Michele – it really is a beautiful castle! It looks cozy in a castle-y way, doesn’t it? If we ever have a Traveling Teacup Host Reunion, we should have it in the Netherlands, don’t you think? We could write it off as a business expense … ! 😉 Hope you’re doing ok and that you have a nice peaceful weekend!

Wow – that is quite the achievement for a tea cup! Across the Atlantic for tea in front of a Dutch castle complete with Dutch linens. Looks like a beautiful place, and the cakes and cookies look scrumptious What fun for TR!

Hi Kim! It really is! I was surprised that it wasn’t actually the longest distance though – you’d think the ocean would be bigger! 🙂 I’m so glad Martine wanted to host – it’s such a fun trip for us to follow! Hope you have a lovely weekend, my fellow teacup host! Take care up there!

Denise! It’s been a long time since I’ve been anywhere in Europe, so if you decide to make a trip, give me a call – I’m sure you’d be needing some extra company on a journey to the Netherlands! 🙂 I’ll be sure to pack the stroopwafels!

I’m ridiculously excited that it’s Friday tonight, and I’m heading for a glass of wine right now! Here’s to a lovely weekend on both sides of the country! 🙂

The sweets in the Netherlands are delicious! So happy to see the lovely setting the Traveling Teacup visited. Reminds me of years ago we lived in N Germany we would drive across the border for the day including afternoon tea! Thank you for sharing your trip! Linda

Wow – living in Germany would be fun, and getting to visit the Netherlands would be such an excellent day trip! 🙂 I’d love to try some of those delicacies too – maybe I’ll follow the Traveling Teacup’s footsteps someday! It’ll be great when she visits you in the spring! Happy Tuesday!
