Well there I was, with some thawed puff pastry one day, so I made up this ridiculously easy cinnamon pastry swirls recipe! It was so fun and so easy – and delicious – I thought I’d share it with you!
This is going to be a very quick step by step, so if you have any questions about anything I might have skipped over, just ask in the Comments. I’m happy to share more info.
This is almost the complete opposite of my other favorite treats, toasted sugar champagne cake and tiny chocolate peanut butter cake, but there’s room for all kinds of desserts, right?
Cinnamon Pastry Swirls – Step 1
Flour your work surface.
Then lay out a mostly thawed puff pastry sheet. You can roll it a little if you want.
Cinnamon Pastry Swirls – Step 2
Then brush it with a mixture of a beaten egg and maybe a teaspoon of water.
Sprinkle sugar on top.
Then cinnamon.
I didn’t measure either of these toppings, and you can’t see the sugar very well in the picture. But I’m pretty sure I put more cinnamon than sugar, so maybe you can just go by the cinnamon picture, and your own taste.
Cinnamon Pastry Swirls – Step 3
Roll up the pastry – you’re going to have fabulous cinnamon pastry swirls!
Step 4 – The Fun – and Funny – Part!
Then use some thin nylon thread (or fishing line.)
Hold one end in either hand, slide it under one end of the roll about a half inch from the end, or as thick you’d like your cinnamon pastry swirls.
Bring each end of the thread to the top of the roll like you’re going to tie it at the top. But instead, just pull it tight around, and the string will cut through the roll from the bottom!
It’s a difficult maneuver to describe, and my thread was so thin it was almost transparent, so I couldn’t get any good pictures of it in action.
But it was super fun to see those little rounds pop off! When you finish one, you just move your invisible thread down another half inch or so, and do it again! You can see the thread a little better in this picture.
I thought this picture below might at least give you a better idea. Maybe you can kind of tell the way I was holding it and how much pressure it took. See how the thread crosses there on top?
Pretty soon you have a whole bunch of rounds that are going to turn into cinnamon pastry swirls.
Step 5 – Bake them
Lay all your rounds out on a baking sheet. They’re going to spread out a bit, so put them about an inch or so apart. I got about 15 swirls from one sheet of puff pastry.
Put them in a 400 degree oven for 10 minutes or so, or until they’re golden. Every oven is different, so be sure to check early and often!
Why the Cinnamon Pastry Swirls Are So Good
I think the reason I love these so much, is that I didn’t put much sugar on. Most of the “sweetness” is from the pastry itself, and it’s a lovely just-right treat! Especially with tea, they’re just fantastic!
So there you have it. Let me know what you think. I’d love to hear if you’ve ever done anything like the thread technique and how it worked for you!

Brilliant quick treat – I always have some emergency puff pastry in the freezer! And I love the tip about cutting them with thread – definitely trying that next time!

Barbara, I wouldn’t have thought to use puffy pastry for cinnamon rolls…very clever. I also love the string-cutting technique. Great recipe and easy to make. You are one smart cookie!

Hi Esme! Yes, they’re so yummy, and I’m thrilled about the dental floss. Thanks so much for stopping by – Happy Weekend!

What an yummy looking crisp. And yes, Barb…I use dental floss to cut my cinnamon rolls. I have tried serrated knives, fishing line, etc and find the floss (unflavored of course) works perfectly. I have tried string or twine and they “drag” and leave pieces of cotton, but the dental floss is perfect and who doesn’t have dental floss on hand?
Have a great and blessed week.
Barbara Leone says
Ha! Yes, unflavored! Although I suppose if you wanted a minty pastry … ! 🤣 Hope you have a great week too Kari – thanks so much for stopping by!
