How to Set an Easy Spring Tulip Tablescape

How do you set an easy spring tulip tablescape? By getting yourself some tulips, of course! I found these beauties as I was leaving the grocery store, and had to turn around and go back for them!

And they’re easy because I didn’t do any arranging at all – just put them in the vase, and let them do their own thing.

And tell you a secret? This vase isn’t actually a vase. In reality, it’s a marble wine chiller that was a gift from our son’s thoughtful and perceptive girlfriend! It’s a beautiful addition to the table whether it’s holding wine or flowers – and she knew we loved both options!

A Blue and Gold Plate Stack

I’ve been having such a love affair with my blue dinnerware from Williams Sonoma recently! (You can read more about that in this post.) The plate stack is a pretty blue and gold, and topped off with this gorgeous WS Bluebell salad plate. I love the pattern and the gold rim, and its so elegant and luxurious.

The deep blue stoneware dinner plate is a nice base for the salad plate. And the gold charger goes with the gold rim.

Flatware for the Spring Tulip Tablescape

I’m also really loving this flatware pattern. Just different enough to be interesting – the shape is so fun. And as I mention every time I use it, it’s so nice and heavy and solid. I love to use things that feel good, as well as look good. And if they work well, even better. (Which these do!)

The Usual Glassware

Another thing I like to bring up often, is how you don’t have to have a huge collection to set a beautiful table – a spring tulip tablescape, or any other! Yes, I admit, I do have more plates and flatware sets than a most normal people. And also a larger quantity of glassware than most people.

But I only have one set of water glasses – these crystal ones. I use them every single day. I also only have a couple varieties of wine glasses, and I use at least one variety of them every night too!

My personal and professional advice? Find one thing you really like and get enough to cover the number of people you regularly have at your table. Then use it all the time!

If you’re a collector like I am, then feel free to add to your collection until you run out of space. But all you really need, is the one you love.

Lots of “White Space” in the Spring Tulip Tablescape

There’s a term in graphic design and other disciplines called “White Space.” It means the empty space – often on a page – where there’s nothing happening. There’s a certain amount of white space that’s recommended for various applications, and it’s usually used to rest your eyes and your mind. To keep things from getting too cluttered, and to make the viewer relaxed.

Our spring tulip tablescape has lots of white space. Spring to me, feels like the earth is opening. I get to go outside and be in a wider environment than the one I was cooped up in all winter. The sky feels bigger, and the air feels fresher. It’s very relaxing and soothing, and I wanted to reflect that in my table this time.

So, there’s space on the table, and also space in the room. Outside of a few areas that are a “bit” cluttered, we try to keep the main part of our house pretty spare. We may have gone a little too far with the emptiness in the dining room, but for this spring, it’s perfect.

(You know, one of the things that’s so weird about our dining room table, is how the sides look under a tablecloth! It’s a really pretty edge of graduated trim, but put a tablecloth on it, and it’s all lumpy and wrinkly looking! ANYway…)

Here’s to a Lovely Spring!

I’m hoping that your table looks better under a tablecloth than mine, and that you get a chance to set a pretty and easy spring tulip tablescape someday soon! Let me know how you use tulips, and whether or not you like the blue and gold color combination. Especially with the pink and yellow of the flowers.

Happy Spring and thanks so much for stopping over!

  1. Ahhhh, I love tulips and these are so pretty I can see why they lured you back into the store! Mine never seem to last very long in an arrangement, but they are worth it anyway for the heavenly little piece of spring. Your dining table is gorgeous, BTW, LOVE those chunky carved legs <3 <3 <3

    1. Thanks Janet! The table and the buffet that went with it were my bribe to move to Minnesota all those many years ago. I was supposed to get a grand piano, but since that didn’t work out, I got the dining set instead! 😊 Then when I was able to leave MN, of course it came with me. One day it’ll get refinished, along with repairing the chairs … ! How come things never stay new? I’m just asking … 🤣 Thanks for stopping over and visiting so many posts. I’ll catch up with you soon too – you always inspire me and give me something to laugh about! Hope you have a lovely rest of your week, and a great weekend.

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting, Paula – Isn’t Tuesday Turn About fun? I’ll pop over and visit your link ups. Hope you have a lovely week!

  2. Hi Barbara,

What a beautiful table you have once again set and shared with us. Tulips are a favorite flower – sure wish they lasted longer though! I heard years ago if you put an old copper penny in the water they live longer. And if you have room – before you go to bed put your vase with flowers in your fridge – think “greenhouse cooler.” They will last much longer that way too. I have been doing it for decades. Fresh flowers are a rare lovely wonderful thing and it dawned on me that would keep them nicer if they were cool at night. It’s worked.

    Hugs.

    1. That’s a fabulous tip, Michele! I’m definitely going to try that. Maybe I’ll have to snag somebody’s old fridge when they get a new one and put it in the basement …. !? I’ll have to try the penny in the water trick again too – I remember trying it once, but don’t remember the outcome. Obviously, it’s time for another experiment. Thanks so much for stopping by – Always love to hear from you my friend!

  3. What a gorgeous Spring tablescape Barbara. I so love tulips and daffodils. Spring – my favourite time of year along with Fall. The vase/wine chiller is stunning as is ‘always’ Williams Sonoma among all the other beautiful items you display on your tables. I then jumped into another site of yours and before I knew it. and a few hours later, I was thinking of how to set my next table which will most likely now be while camping at the end of this month. I love your advice – Find one thing you really like and get enough to cover the number of people you regularly have at your table. Then use it all the time! BUT how do you choose just one?

    1. Ha – so true! Impossible to choose just one, but I guess just start somewhere and work out from there! Or in our case, scale back from there! (Ok, who am I kidding – I don’t see any scaling back in my immediate future .., !) 🤣 Ooh can’t wait to see your next camping table – remember to send pictures!

  4. It’s a lovely table Barbara – I mean its spring with yellow, pink, blue, and green – what’s not to love! The vase is perfect for those tulips and I’ve learned not to try and arrange them because it’s hopeless lol. I’m so glad that you love your WS plates – they are gorgeous and I’d want to use them all the time too if I had them. And the flatware is lovely. I agree to its so nice to be able to use the things you love over and over – just brings smiles. Hope you are having a fantastic spring my friend; we are sadly still with snow. Take care!

    1. Haha – yes, tulip arrangements are reasonably hopeless! Unless you want to redo them every morning, of course. 🤣 Thanks for stopping by Kim, and here’s to spring warming up!

  5. I love your table setting for Spring. Tulips are always a good idea, aren’t they?! The table setting is truly beautiful as well as restful, who wouldn’t want to sit here with you!? Everything comes together beautifully on this table, the golden glow of the flatware makes it extra special, as do your beautiful crystal glasses. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. xo Lidy

    1. Lidy thanks so much! You’re right – tulips ARE always a good idea! Especially in spring, right? 😊 Hope you’re having a lovey season so far – so sweet of you to stop by.

  6. I adore tulips and love to watch them move and change daily! They look great in the beautiful marble wine cooler that your son’s girlfriend gave you! Love the gold flatware so pretty!

    1. Ha – me too! I come downstairs every morning curious to see what those tulips are up to now! 🤣 Thanks so much for popping over Jenna. Hope things are going well for you, and spring is fully springing down south!

  7. We had an Ethan Allen Georgian Court dining table for a number of years. I talked my husband into getting something new, and we did. The new table is Kincaid Weatherford in the cornsilk color. It’s quite large … actually about 3 inches longer than the previous one and it can extend to 118″. None of my tablecloths fit, though.

I want to get away from the table pad and cloth scenario. Do you have a post of a formal table without a tablecloth? We have Gorham silver (Strasbourg pattern), Gorham Platinum Elegance silver, and Rogaska Gallia crystal. My colors are blue and white. I like to go all out and haven’t done that in ages.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Dodie! I know – that’s a problem with longer tables, but they make up for it in so many ways! Plus, yes – you can set a gorgeous table without a cloth. I’ve done several posts without them. Your silver and crystal sound beautiful, and with your blue and white, you’ve got so many options. I’d love to see pictures of your tablecloth-less tablescape – feel free to send some along! 😊 Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Happy April!

  8. Love your comment about creating space on a table to relax your guests. It does allow the eyes to take a rest from all the busyness of our world today. The tulips are beautiful. Have a lovely week.
