What a lovely visit for The Traveling Teacup – the beautiful historical town of St Mary’s City in the state of Maryland! Her host, Tammy of White Lilac Farmhouse fame, takes her – and us – on a wonderful tour of Maryland’s first city! I’ll let her tell you about it, but first, let’s catch up on our teacup’s travels.
The Start of the Journey
Our teacup left Portland back in May of 2020 to visit her hosts, starting with this post. And here’s the last post of her first year, where you can see all her destinations up to then.
The map was getting pretty full, so we started another for year two, and she’s been to all these places:
- A gorgeous farm in Estacada OR, the home of brilliant blogger, table stylist, and entrepreneur Renae Frey.
- An exciting train ride to Santa Fe NM with the always fun and creative Albuquerque blogger, Jeanne Washburn.
- Amherst OH and the home of talented tea loving Renaissance Woman and Mantel and Table reader, Valerie.
- A Stop in Ooltewah, TN over the Memorial Day Weekend to visit Lilly, a nursing professor and fellow tea lover.
- A lovely tour of Paducah KY with fabulous cook, writer, and food & lifestyle blogger Leslie Watkins.
- Montz LA for a visit with Tracie, who shared her beautiful home, even in extra rainy weather.
- Largo FL to share a great new Halloween tradition with Corrine and her new husband.
Stop #8 ~ A Visit to the Lovely Historical Town of St Mary’s City
After her quick stop in Florida, Tessa Rose’s next visit was 929 miles away – North to Maryland.
Her host Tammy lives very near to St Mary’s City, and took her for a visit. Tammy has written her own post, and I’ll give you the link at the end so you can pop over and read more about their trip. And also some snow!
Tammy says:
I had heard about this sweet traveling teacup from a friend and reached out to Barbara about Tessa Rose visiting Maryland.
To my delight a box arrived with the lovely Tessa Rose ready for a new adventure! My plan is to take her to visit the first city of Maryland, the historical St. Mary’s City.
Maryland’s First Settlement
There an abundance of history in Maryland. Historical St. Mary’s City was Maryland’s first European settlement and capital. A former colonial town, the city was founded in 1634. The Maryland colony was founded as a place where English Catholics could escape religious persecution.
The original settlement was the fourth oldest permanent English settlement in the United States. The settlers arrived in Maryland on the Dove. Today, St. Mary’s College sits in the heart of St. Mary’s City and half of the area is occupied by the campus of the college.
Here Tess Rose is sitting on the dock over looking the beautiful St. Mary’s River.
A Historical Town with a Historical Brewery
The building seen here was constructed in the late 1600s for brewing and baking. Garrett Van Sweringen wanted to meet the growing demands for beer and bread from passing ships. You can see the brick open fire place used for cooking.
And Snow!
Tessa Rose got to experience Maryland’s first snow of the season. It was a sizable snowfall too!
What a lovely way to end Tessa Rose’s visit with Tammy!
