Welcome to our first Teacup Tuesday of the new year, and this lovely yellow rose teacup.
QUICK NOTE: This teacup did travel, but it’s not the official Traveling Teacup! Click HERE if you want the beginning of the Traveling Teacup series. (Although this post is fun too … !)
The Yellow Rose Teacup Flies to Phoenix
It seems like the Traveling Teacup got all the journeys last year, but I actually got to travel once too! And I took this beautiful yellow rose teacup along with me.
The destination: a very small, safe gathering at historic Bella Terra – the home of one of my dear blogging friends. I’ve written several times about my trip – you can see more in my Phoenix Table, Mantel, and Teacup posts.
I packed a few special gifts for my friends, and this teacup was one of them.
In The Orchard
But before my friend actually got it, I had to take some photos in this beautiful lemon orchard! What a perfect place for our yellow rose teacup to land!
It was especially wonderful for me to see lemons on the trees! (Especially in November!) I live in the Pacific Northwest, where November is cold and rainy. But for a few years long ago, I lived just outside of Phoenix in an old lemon grove. And coming back to somewhere warm – and with lemon trees – was lovely!
Yellow Rose Teacup History
And speaking of lovely, let’s talk about the teacup itself.
Not only is it lovely, it’s very interesting too.
The manufacturer is Thomas, as it says in the shield backstamp. And although Thomas was bought out fairly early on by Rosenthal, they kept the trade name Thomas for many years.
According to PorcelainMarksAndMore.com, which is a resource I use a lot, they used this mark between 1908 and 1939.
The pattern is “La Reine,” which means “The Queen.” Our yellow rose teacup certainly looks regal to me!
And It’s Hand Painted
As you can see from the note on the bottom of the saucer, our teacup is hand painted.
And unless I miss my guess, it was painted by someone named John. Or else FOR someone named John.
I’ve never seen an artist sign their work like this, but it’s really fun.
I’m curious to know if John was a painter in the factory, or if he bought it unpainted, and painted it himself. More research needed, there. (But, later. I promised myself I’d just write this post, and not dink around getting lost in research this time!)
Interior Detail
Another thing I love about this cup, is the single rosebud on the inside. It’s so delicate, and so pretty when you’re drinking your tea!
Yellow Rose Teacup Research Update
Oops – I did do a little more research! (I couldn’t help it!) This pattern is reasonably available, and I found several other pieces online. They all have this or a similar signature.
So more than likely, John worked for the company. He sure was talented. Just look at those beautiful yellow roses!
The Golden Hour
The sun was just starting to go down when I took these pictures, and the orchard was glowing! It was the perfect place to relax and have a cup of tea. Which is what I did!
I’ll leave you with a few more photos, so you can enjoy the sun and our yellow rose teacup!

I am SO behind on everything this year, but now that I am out of my “slump” I am making the rounds! How lovely it is to see my beautiful teacup displayed in Mary’s orchard! I treasure her dearly! Especially now that I have actually begun to drink tea!
Barbara Leone says
Ha – another tea convert! 😉 Glad you like the teacup in the orchard too – I thought it was the perfect place, and I’m loving the yellow this season. Probably because it’s so gloomy up here. I’ve been slumping a little myself, and so ready for some spring. But until then, I have sunny memories of our fabulous time in AZ! Happy Weekend my friend!
RHONDA HALLSTROM says
That teacup is absolutely stunning!
Barbara Leone says
Thanks so much Rhonda! I’ve been finding such great ones lately! 😉 Happy Tuesday up there!

Lovely post. I collect china also. It’s fun to blog about an item, and sometimes the blog post encourages you to do a bit of research. I find it makes me enjoy my favorite pieces more.
Barbara Leone says
Hi! I think exactly the same thing – finding out about your pieces makes their history come alive and is so much fun! I just popped over to your blog and OMG Jeanne! What a fabulous china collection you have! I want to go back and take some time – you have some gorgeous pieces, and I love your Tudor monstrosity from 2010. All the little china photos at the bottom of the page made my heart beat a little faster – can’t wait to explore! Thanks so much for stopping by, and Happy Sunday Night!

I think I may have missed some of last years journey with the teacup, but glad I caught this one!
Nice history about it, and those colors and design are beautiful.
I wish I was in a sunny lemon grove, it must smell heavenly when the trees start to bud and blossom in the spring.

Hi Rachelle! I wish I was back there now too! 🙂 This teacup did travel, but there’s another “Official” Traveling Teacup. It’s actually a lovely little pink flowered one that a dear friend gave me. You can see where it started in this post:
Thanks so much for stopping by – can’t want for your Friday with Friends link party tomorrow! See you then!

Love the history of this teacup and saucer! I have never seen a signature on the front of a cup like that!
Barbara Leone says
I know – isn’t that fun? I guess the signature let people know it really was hand painted! Thanks so much for the visit – I’m heading over to see your Top 2020 posts now! 🙂
Jenna says
What a gorgeous teacup Barbara! Your photos are stunning!
Barbara Leone says
Aw Jenna – thank you so much! I’m so glad you like the teacup too! 🙂 Happy Wednesday!
Myrna says
The real question is Did you put fresh lemon in your tea ? Beautiful cup.
It’s very sad that we have no modern day painters like that.
Barbara Leone says
Hi Myrna – you know, I didn’t even think of it! Wasn’t that silly!?! Maybe I should go get a cup of tea with real lemon right now to make up for it! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by, and Happy New Year!
Kim says
Oh, she’s a lovely tea cup Barbara, and you picked the perfect backdrop for the pictures – a lemon tree. And 1908-39 – she must be nearing 100 years. Wow! And yum, what could be better than fresh lemons from the tree? Drool… Happy Tuesday friend!
Barbara Leone says
Hi Kim – I just loved that orchard so much. I hope I look that good when I’m 100 years old! 🙂 Happy Wednesday, fellow teacup lover!
Michele M. says
Beautiful teacup, photos and yes, John is an amazing artist. I can barely doodle well. That takes such talent.
Hope you have a happy and healthy new year, Barbara.
Barbara Leone says
Ha – me too Michele! I’m always in awe of people with such amazing skills – and yes – talent! Happy New Year to you too my friend!
LA CONTESSA says
NOW, WHAT YELLOW ROSE DO YOU THINK JOHN PAINTED?!!!
I ONLY PLANT YELLOW AND WHITE ROSES IN MY GARDEN SO INTRIGUED I AM!!
XX
Barbara Leone says
Hi! I did research the variety – I thought maybe since the cup pattern was La Reine, that may be the name of the rose too. There IS a La Reine rose, but it’s pink! 🙂 I’ve seen your garden on your website, and it’s gorgeous! If I ever find the name of the teacup rose, I’ll let you know! Happy Wednesday!
Chas Greener says
It was such a fun trip and your picture are amazing as always friend. I can’t wait for us all to get together again and have another lovely tea party together. Hugs to you friend.
Barbara Leone says
YES – won’t that be fun?! Our last trip was such a blast, and I’m glad you like the photos. It was so easy in the bright AZ sun! 🙂 Hugs back to you!
Happy Haute Home says
A lemon orchid! How fantastic! Love the idea! Actually you are inspiring me to buy a lemon tree thank you Barbara!
Barbara Leone says
Oooh you should! We have a lemon tree that my father in law got from a colleague years and years ago – it’s probably over 80 years old! But it’s still lovely! 😉
