Have you ever served dessert in a teacup? I hadn’t either, until I started thinking about ways to use my ever-growing teacup collection!
Using Your Teacup Collection
I love teacups! And since you’re reading this right now, there’s a good chance you love them too.
Or else you just inherited your grandparents’ china and have no idea what to do with it all!
Besides drinking tea out of my teacups, I’m always trying to figure out other fun ways to use them. I’ve written several posts about what to do with teacups, like giving them as gifts.
But there’s nothing like going back to the basics (almost,) and using them at the table.
Dessert in a Teacup ~ On a Charger
Even though this is a teacup post, I’m going to talk about chargers for a minute. I know this seems like a bit of a deviation, but I’ll come back around to the topic, I promise!
In the ultra-correct use of chargers, they’re removed from the table fairly early on in the dinner process. But I like to leave them on for the whole meal. It just seems nice to have a designated eating space, especially one that’s pretty. And especially if you aren’t using a place mat.
Then when you bring out the dessert, it’s highlighted against a lovely background. (There – see?)
I think that dessert in a teacup is so pretty, and it’s unexpected too! Your guests will be surprised and pleased that their dessert is as lovely as the dinner.
When to Put Your Dessert in a Teacup
I like to use a teacup – and saucer – when I’m serving something that could be potentially messy. Like ice cream and blackberries on a sweltering hot day, for instance!
It was hot the day I served this dessert. I didn’t even get this photo shoot done before the ice cream started melting all over the place!
But it wasn’t really ALL over the place, because I had that saucer under there. And under that, our charger again. Another good reason to use one – cleaner linens.
Manufacturer’s Info
The teacups that are holding our dessert are from one of my favorite manufacturers. Noritake. They make so many gorgeous patterns.
As I mentioned in this post, while I do love researching the history of china, I don’t mind if there’s info right there on the backstamp! This pattern – Shenandoah – was my original wedding china. I chose it when I was 20 years old and I still love it.
Noritake makes beautiful and durable china. As I say, I’ve had this for many many (many) years, and it’s still in remarkably good shape. Even after 11 moves!
Dessert in a Teacup ~ Behind the Scenes
As we saw above, the funniest Behind the Scenes moment was when I realized the ice cream was melting all over.
Obviously, it was time to wrap up the photography portion of the evening. And move on to the dessert in a teacup portion!
Yes! Serve Dessert in a Teacup!
So next time you want something a little different and fun, serve your dessert in a teacup! They can all be the same cup that might match your dinner china.
Or they can all be different!
Different is always great too, because your guests will compare them, and there’s always so much to talk about! AND dessert in a teacup is a lot of fun!
Have you ever served dessert in a teacup? I’d love to hear how you and your guests liked it!
Take care my friends, and Happy Teacup Tuesday!

Yesterday I couldn’t comment about the yummy ice cream. I am a ‘bot’ ?
Barbara Leone says
Hi Myrna – isn’t that weird? It happened to someone a while ago and my hosting service fixed it. I’ll definitely look into it again – thanks for letting me know – I’m sure you’re not a bot! 🤣 And glad you liked the ice cream! Happy Thursday my friend!

Oh I love to use my teacups for reasons such as this lovely one. Those blackberries look soooo yummy!
That is a gorgeous Noritake pattern.
My father-in-law years ago when my hubs was very young worked a few months at a time in Japan. He loved it there. I remember him telling me all about getting a private tour behind the regular scenes at the Noritake manufacturing plant. Oh was that fascinating to learn all about it.
One of my most beloved teacups is one he gave me about a year before he passed away that the Noritake folks gave him. They asked how many ladies he had in his family, they wanted to gift him a gift of a teacup and saucer to each one. I was given my husband’s aunt’s on his mother’s side who had passed away and he still had. It is one of the few I have on display. It’s in that cabinet near my piano and houses all my most precious things that have a special meaning to me. I am not terribly over sentimental and don’t keep everything, but that one certainly is a keeper.
Love your post. Hope all is well. Big hugs.

Oooh you should definitely eat ice cream out of one. (Or out of anything, really! It might or might not be my favorite thing on earth … !) 😉 Thanks so much for stopping over – I always love to see you!

Hi Barbara, what a fabulous idea…dessert in a tea cup! Serving a simple dessert like ice cream and berries is elevated when serving in a cup and saucer. I will definitely use this idea. Wishing you a most wonderful week!
