Welcome to an updated Teacup Tuesday featuring the Blue Danube pattern. There’s a movement these days to honor our front line heroes with blue and white. This is one of my very favorite teacups, and you can’t get any bluer and whiter – and I couldn’t be more grateful!
So to get started, here’s the original Instagram post.
Teacup Tuesday 19 May 2020
Here’s a blue and white tribute to all our front line heroes still out there risking their lives every day! I originally posted this just four months ago, but it seems like forever! Since then then world has changed. But one thing that hasn’t, is the kindness of this community, and the bravery and sacrifice of people who care. I hope you enjoy this post, and THANK YOU to all of you!
Extra Blue Danube Teacup Tidbits
I do so love blue and white! I guess since this pattern is Blue Danube, it got me thinking about a friendly sidewalk café along the river. Wouldn’t these colors be so beautiful on a sunny morning?
I imagine a white tiled patio overlooking the river. It would have blue urns of pink flowers, with pretty tables set out under blue umbrellas. The café to which the tables belonged, would have a white brick front and jaunty blue and white awnings over multi-paned windows. Also, a lovely hand painted sign – blue script on a crisp white background.
The scent of coffee and warm pastries would float out onto our patio, and mix with the fresh breeze off the river. The flowers would ruffle gently as we sipped our tea (or coffee) from lovely Blue Danube cups.
We could read some good books, visit with passers by, or just watch the boats on the river. Or maybe we could alternate activities every time a server came to bring more croissants and refill our cups!
Manufacturer’s Info
I so love this cup! When I did my research on it, I found out that lots of different manufacturers make a pattern called Blue Danube. Most of the others aren’t as well known or recognizable as this one, though.
The info below came directly from kovels.com. It tells the story so well, that I’m quoting it verbatim.
Blue Danube porcelain dinnerware was made exclusively for distribution by Lipper International Inc. of New York. Lipper started business in 1946 as Lipper & Mann, importers of glass and ceramics. The company bought items from Europe and sold them to department, jewelry and home furnishing stores. In 1947, it started selling tableware items imported from Japan. The Blue Danube pattern was designed for them in 1951. Porcelain pieces were made in Japan with dark blue flowers on white ground, copied from Meissen’s Onion pattern. Lipper used a banner backstamp on Blue Danube pieces from 1951 through 1976, a rectangular backstamp from 1977 to 2000, and a 50th anniversary backstamp was used in 2001. In 1963, the name was changed to Lipper International, Inc. In 2004, Portmeirion USA took over distribution of Blue Danube dinnerware and giftware.
Kovels.com
The Lipper website lists the same dates, so we can tell with a fair amount of certainty, that they made our pieces at different times. The saucer is from 1951 – 1976. but they used this mark on the cup from 1977 – 2000. Lipper discontinued the Blue Danube pattern in 2010, but it’s still very available. For instance, on the Mantel and Table Shopping page! (Link below, as always!)
Blue Danube Teacup ~ Behind the Scenes
I was kind of on a roll with my teacup photography the day I took these pictures. I did several cups that day, and you can see the remains of the previous setup there to the left on the loveseat.
Because our front porch faces north, the light is almost always pretty good. (If there’s any sun out, of course!) So this wicker loveseat gets a lot of use as a photo studio.
I love using my Replica Surfaces panels! They make set up so easy. Since I didn’t have any hare-brained scheme this time, everything worked well, and our Blue Danube teacup had its closeup!

Hi Barb-
You know I remember my mother having a few pieces of that – how she loved blue and white! I believe she called it Blue Onion though. Unless I am just remembering wrong. She’s been gone so long. Wish I could ask her.
Lovely post! Have a wonderful week.
It’s been cold and grey and rainy/snowy for days here in mid Ohio.

Hi Michele! That’s so cool that your mom had some too! And you’re right – this pattern is based off the famous Blue Onion. The inside is basically the same, but the border of Onion has “onions” instead of flowers.
But funny enough, the onions were really pomegranates based on the original Chinese designs, but westerners didn’t know pomegranates – they looked like onions to them! 😁 If you google blue onion pattern vs blue danube you can see the difference in the border. Gosh maybe I should have included that in the post! 😁 Thanks for the great comment – it’s so nice to have those beautiful memories of your mom! 💙
