Today’s teacup is so much fun! As always, we’ll start with the Instagram post.
Teacup Tuesday 12 May 2020
Welcome to this week’s Teacup Tuesday and a lovely – versatile – Noritake teacup! Today’s blog post is about something really fun this teacup can do at the dinner table!
What Can You Do With A Teacup? Use It As A Teacup Place Card!
As I may have mentioned in an earlier episode or two, there are so many things one can do with a teacup! For instance, with the use of a glass-writer pen, a teacup can become a place card!
Let’s say you’re having a dinner party. You know you’ll be sitting around afterward drinking tea and coffee, and eating desserts and cheeses and such. So maybe you want to have the cups on the table right from the get-go.
In that case, you can easily turn your teacups into place cards! Use one of the wine writers, in this case silver, to write the guest’s name. That’s it! Though I’m sure you can do a more artistic job than I did. But you get the gist!
These pens were a gift to me, and I don’t know how we lived without them all those years! The writing washes right off, and they’re so fun at a party!
People write their names or funny sayings, or draw pictures on their wine glasses. It’s a unique and fun way to NOT lose your glass, and it’s a fun conversation starter too!
And there’s no reason not to use them on teacups! I’ve done this for years and never had any problems ever. But even so, it’s wise to test the pen out on the bottom of your teacup – just to be positive!
This works best if you have a solid light colored spot on the cup, where the name will be easily visible.
You can even use a pen that goes with the shades of your table. I used silver to match my china, but they come in lots of different colors. I’ve linked some in the shopping section below.
Manufacturer’s Info
Noritake is a famous Japanese china brand, and they do make gorgeous pieces. Unlike a lot of my teacups, this one is a pattern that’s still in production!
The name of the pattern is Austin Platinum. (Which Noritake very helpfully printed on the underside of both cup and saucer.) It’s a beautiful pattern – delicate but sturdy. You can also put it right in the dishwasher! That’s something fun in a lovely set like this. And it’s relatively inexpensive too!
Teacup Place Card ~ Behind The Scenes
My garden is overflowing with roses right now! However, our weather forecast called for heavy rain and wind. So we cut all the roses that were in full bloom and wouldn’t stand up to the elements. You can see some of the buckets and various containers I used to bring them in.
Of all the colors, I thought the peachy/salmony/orangy ones looked prettiest with this lovely china. Of course, any of them would have worked, really, since both the china and the roses are so beautiful! It’s hard to go wrong.
One of these days I’m going to get myself a cup stand. That way I won’t have to keep using my crystal swan to hold the saucers up! But the swan did the job again this time, so I guess we’re ok for now.

What a great idea! Had never seen these pens before. I’d recommend Dollar Tree for a plate easel; I love them in black or clear plastic so the china design shows! Your roses are beautiful. Here in Maine, I am enjoying my tulips and daffodils! Going to send someone out to prune our 2 rosebushes; if there are no budding leaves, it’s toast!

Hi Kathy! The pens are so much fun! Thanks for the recommendation for the plate easel – I don’t know why I haven’t gotten one before now, but getting a clear one is really smart! 💗 Sounds like your flowers are several weeks behind ours out in the PNW. Hope your roses aren’t toast! 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by, and stay safe out there!

Barbara… this is such a darling idea! I’m a huuuuuge tea drinker. When this quarantine nightmare is over, I am going to have a tea party. Enjoy your Wednesday and stay healthy!!

Katie! Thanks so much for writing! Your comment went to spam for some reason, but I rescued and reclassified it, so now I should be able to respond in a much more timely fashion! 🙂 I’m exactly the same way – and I can’t wait to entertain again! I hope you have lots of delicious tea in the meantime!

Barbara, your roses are glorious! WOW! Your garden must look spectacular! Still too cold here, in fact a polar vortex rolled in this past weekend, can you believe it? It’s May! Crazy! But I think we are getting into the 80s this weekend, so hopefully our flowers and roses will bloom soon without the threat of freezing. I love your teacup idea, never thought about writing on a tea cup, so clever. When in a group, we often mark our SOLO cups or wine glasses but a tea cup is new to me! Thanks for the great idea.

Wow! There’s just no telling about the weather is there?! Every year at this time we remember why they named Portland the City of Roses – it’s pretty fabulous! 😉 I bet you’ve had some lovely art on your SOLO cups! If you put something on a teacup, send it over – I’d love to see! Happy Tuesday my friend!
