It’s shaping up to be a beautiful spring in the Pacific Northwest – just about the right time to have an elegant spring picnic. (I first published this post in April of 2020. It might be a little too early to tell about this year yet, but I’m crossing my fingers it’s going to be as beautiful as that year!) So let’s go back in time…
But wait – it’s actually pretty chilly out there still! Brrrrr – I’m not having a picnic outside!
So let’s bring it in!
But Where Are We?
If you’ve been following along with Mantel and Table for any length of time, you’ve probably already realized that this is not my house. I’m actually on a staycation at a local hotel!
My husband and I usually take one separate vacation each year – we both have deep streaks of solitariness, if that’s a word. So, since I couldn’t travel this year, I got a lovely suite with a balcony overlooking the river. I admit, I did bring a couple table setting’s worth of dishes, and a bucket of flowers!
This is something I’ve always wanted to do. Don’t you just want to set tables and redecorate any new space you visit? (Maybe that’s just me … !) But anyway, this was the perfect opportunity to mess around with that idea.
Our Elegant Spring Picnic Table
The table I had to work with was actually a beautiful large desk with a black glass top. Which was really serendipitous, because I had brought my black striped napkins and dark salad plates! You can see the black edges of the table in the picture below.
Same Old Table Ware
It never ceases to amaze me how you can use the same basic pieces in different situations and combinations and get totally different looks!
I’ve used this exact arrangement many times before. But with a change of linens and flowers, and in a new setting of course, it’s a whole new table. (Here’s one very similar, which IS at my house, btw!)
These are my same old plastic chargers, everyday white dinner plates, and stoneware salad plates.
The same silver pattern my mom started for me when I was 15 and that I use all the time.
My same crystal glasses I’ve had forever.
Some of which came from the thrift store. (Yes, wine glasses, this means you!)
And some super simple and inexpensive, yet elegant, rectangular glass vases. I love these because they can work with just about any style.
The tablecloth was a beautiful find at a vintage store a long time ago. Having that black underneath the lacy parts really shows them off! I think I’m going to use a black tablecloth under it at home some day!
But New Napkins!
I bought the napkins last year at a wonderful local and online shop, Vía Raíz. They’re the thing that really make the picnic vibe happen.
Plus Flowers & Candles Of Course
Grocery store flowers round it all out.
Oh and candles – can’t forget the two little mercury glass votives!
So here’s our indoor elegant spring picnic table! Makes me want to get out the picnic basket full of fried chicken. Why didn’t I think to bring that with me?!
I hope you get a chance to have an elegant spring picnic soon – either in or out!
Stay safe, and Happy Spring!
