Hi there – welcome to Teaucp Tuesday, and a yellow poppy teacup mystery! The maker of today’s cup has such an odd name, I’m not even sure how to say it! I have one or two guesses, but let’s start off with the Instagram post, as always.
Teacup Tuesday 07 April 2020
Welcome to another Teacup Tuesday – today we have the prettiest yellow poppy teacup with the oddest name! Click the link in my profile or pop over to MANTELandTABLE.com for all the scoop! Hope you’re all staying safe and well. Take care out there!
Extra Yellow Poppy Teacup Tidbits
This cup is a little bit of a departure for me – I usually like smaller patterns. But this was so lovely I couldn’t help myself! I got it during my first virtual shopping trip, which I wrote about in this post a while ago.
Even though my own children are long grown, this lovely yellow poppy teacup had me thinking about decorating a nursery. My younger son had a yellow and orange nursery, so maybe that’s where it came from.
In any case, wouldn’t this make a darling bright nursery? I’d have soft white walls, and ask an artist to paint these lovely yellow poppies on them. We could have sheer yellow curtains and yellow bedding and upholstery. And I’m thinking a rag rug with greens and yellows. Maybe a gold satin-edged baby blanket too.
There could be a white wooden rocker where a visitor could cuddle the baby for a while. And if Baby happened to fall asleep, the visitor could drink some tea in the matching yellow poppy teacup!
Manufacturer’s Info
Ok, it’s time for oddness! How do you pronounce the name of this china manufacturer? “Uh-Kuh-Jee-Co?” “Uhh-Caszh-Co?” I finally decided I’d say “You-Cag-Co!” It looks like it should be Japanese, but that’s not a word – is it?
The foil tag on the bottom of the saucer only says Ucagco Ceramics Japan, with a logo. The cup itself doesn’t say anything! And as much as I searched, I could only find one reliable source for info on the manufacturer of our yellow poppy teacup.
Every other mention I found quoted this one website. So I figured I’d go with the crowd and quote it too! See below for the only info I could find on the internet.
UCAGCO Ceramics
UCAGCO actually means United China and Glass Company. Its offices were based in New Orleans and New York. Ucagco was primarily a distributor of dinnerware and glassware. They were the distributor of many Japanese china patterns during the early 1950s. United China & Glass Co. Inc., better known as UCAGCO, dating back to 1850. Founded by Abe Mayer and originally called Abe Mayer & Co., the importer did business throughout the Southeast U.S. as well as Central and South America.
It wasn’t until the 30s that the company took on the official trademark of UCAGCO and began expanding overseas. In fact, after the war, the company’s agent in Japan, S.A. Stolaroff signed the very first contract allowing imports from Japan. A talented ceramic designer himself, Stolaroff worked alongside many Japanese potteries to lead the company’s line of ceramics. In 1956, UCAGCO was sold to Sammons Enterprises and in 1962, Stolaroff, who had become the company’s president, retired.

I guess that means our cup was made in Japan for Ucagco and imported by them. But I’m not positive. If that is the case, it would have been made between 1945 and 1956. Assuming Sammons Enterprises didn’t continue the name. Although, what was Stolaroff doing all those years, then?
I don’t know – this research turned up more questions than answers. Let me know if you know!
Yellow Poppy Teacup ~ Behind the Scenes
I took these photos during my stay-cation here in town. I was originally going to go to a really great workshop in Texas. But that had to be rescheduled, of course, because of the virus. However, since I already had the time off from my day job, (and I was more than ready for a vacation,) I got a lovely suite at a hotel on the waterfront instead! I figured I could hole up for a week, like so many other people are doing, and take pictures!
This is the view from my balcony, overlooking the greenway and the river. You can just see a little rocky beach at the bend in the river there. I’m so glad the leaves aren’t quite out yet, so I can see more of the water.
I dusted off one of the patio tables and tied my satin to the railing. Then all I had to do was choose which flowers I wanted. (I brought way too many with me, but heck I’m going to be here for a week – gotta have flowers!)
And tea too – in my lovely yellow poppy teacup!

Your Tuesday teacup series always makes me smile. Plus, just digging around and trying to find the history of it is SO interesting. I always love a good hunt. Enjoy your week’s vacation. I am sad that our trip was cancelled, but even more sad that you cannot attend the one in June. Now I’m off to make myself a cup of tea!

I know – I’m so disappointed to miss the rescheduled workshop! Maybe I’ll just have to take a trip down to AZ sometime! 🙂
