The idea for this tablescape came from a gold satin Christmas tree skirt. I had decorated my tree with lots of gold, so I thought some gold satin for the skirt would be just the thing. Since the only tree skirt I had was quilted white, I went off to Joann Fabric to find some gold satin.
Glorious Gold Satin
Not only did I find some, I found a whole gorgeous bolt of it. And it was even on sale. (Which hardly ever happens to me.) After I applied my text coupon, it was practically free! The fabric made a beautiful tree skirt, and I even had some left over.
What should I do with a long piece of left over gold satin? Why, make a centerpiece of course, woven in with an evergreen garland. Since we were having my book group and their spouses over for a holiday dinner, the timing was perfect.
Gold Satin and Roses
Except for the gold satin skirt, my tree and mantel decorations were fairly muted. I had used a matte gold ribbon and dried peachy pink roses for a vintage look. Which I would have duplicated for the table, only I was out of dried roses!
So I went to the store to get some fresh ones of the same color. I figured I’d do the vibrant version of the tree and mantel.
Peachy Rose Evergreen Garland
First, I did the garland centerpiece. It was really easy. I just laid the evergreen garland down the length of the table, and wove the gold satin through it.
The rose stems I cut really short so they could stick up and be held by the garland. I sometimes use water tubes if the table’s going to be set for a long time. But in this case, they were only going to be on the table for a couple hours before the guests came. Plus, I was planning to dry them afterwards anyway. Might as well get a head start!
The only other garland additions were the glass matte gold ornaments and a couple little sparkle branches. It’s actually a really simple centerpiece, but the materials are so luxurious that it looks elegant.
White and Gold
Since I was basing the table around the gold satin, I thought I’d just stick with the theme for my tableware. Plus as you might know, I love gold and white with a passion. I’m thrilled whenever I can use it. So of course, I use it all the time.
White linens and gold flatware first. Then a gold charger, basic white dinner plate, and gold accented salad plate made an understated and elegant setting.
The hand painted salad plates are family heirlooms. (You can read their little story in this post.) I’ve looked, but I haven’t been able to find them anywhere, online or otherwise. However, I did find a few other options that would look just as lovely with this setting. I’ve linked them in the shopping section at the bottom of this post.
Mix and Match Wine Glasses
We had 11 people for the dinner, and I didn’t have enough of any one type of wine glass to go around. I ended up using three different styles of glasses – Bordeaux, Pinot, and a large all-purpose glass. Since we also had lots of different wines, we had kind of a little inadvertent game going on during the buffet portion of the evening.
It went something like this. Whoever had Bordeaux glasses tried to get somebody to first, hear them through all the bustle, and second, pass them some Bordeaux! At the same time, the Pinot glass owners were trying to get hold of the Pinot bottles.
The all-purpose people just tried to find something they liked that wasn’t being asked for by the others! It was quite funny. A lot like that boisterous old stock market game called Pit that we used to play in the old days! You can still get this great game, and I’ve linked both the modern and classic versions in the shopping section below.
A Tale of Two Tables
My dining room table can seat eight. So whenever we have more guests than that, we have to bring in another table. I’ve set up this room lots of ways. But the one that seems to work best is with the tables end to end and diagonally in the room. Odd, I know, but it works.
When I first started doing the two table maneuver, I tried to make it look like one big long table. I covered the place where the two tables join and put a tablecloth over all of it. It looked nice, however it didn’t usually work well. Over the years, we had several overturned glasses, slipping plates, and banged knees. So now I’m very careful to show the contours of our two tables so we can avoid any accidents!
Thank you so much for joining me for our gold satin tablescape. I’m always so happy to have you here! Happy Holidays!

Thought I’d drop by and see your full post. I love the quiet elegance of your table (and the mantle). It’s really lovely. Your gold satin almost makes me regret selling my sewing machine. . . not really, it was old and had no bells and whistles! It’s always fun to see how others deal with having more guests than the table can accommodate.

Sandra! Thanks for popping over! I had the same reaction – I’ve had a broken sewing machine for 18 years, but that satin made me want to make a bed skirt, and pillow covers, and curtains, and etc! 🙂 We’ll see how that goes! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful holiday my friend! 💗

What a clever idea to use the satin on your tablescape! A couple months back, I ordered a bunch of satin tablecloths in colors I thought I was going to use this year when decorating my trees. Fast forward a couple months…and they are still sitting here, not used as I completely changed out the color scheme of my decor 🙄 Oh well….there is always next year 🙂
Barbara Leone says
Ha! I do that all the time!:) I’m sure next year – or some year – you’ll do something spectacular with the satin! But in the meantime, I love your trees and decorating this year. Really, those white entry trees just make my heart pitter patter! 💗 Happy Wednesday!
