Roses are some of the flowers I love best! They look so beautiful just about anywhere. When we were at my sister and brother-in-law’s a while back, I got to decorate their mantel! Something I’d wanted to do for a long time.
The whole thing started with setting the table for dinner one night. (You can read about that in this post.) It was easy to reuse a lot of the elements. I just moved the table centerpiece arrangements over to the mantel.
My sister-in-law (SIL) has a lovely old home, and the fireplace is massive! It could carry off even a much larger arrangement. But these smaller, low profile rose bowls were so beautiful, that we wanted to put them where we could see them.
A Big Mirror for a Big Room
The mirror over the mantel is a reproduction antique that SIL got several years ago at a local vintage shop. With a fireplace this big, she needed something pretty hefty to hold its own over the mantel. But the hearth fits the room. One of our friends likes to say that SIL & BIL’s living room is so big that you have to be in it for a while just to notice that it contains two grand pianos!
Flower Arrangements of Roses
For the arrangements, I used some roses from the grocery store in shades of light pink and lavender. The pastels looked good with the cut crystal bowl, and with the lovely sugar and creamer set as vases.
The sugar and creamer came from Good Will. Even though I don’t get there as much as I’d like, I usually find really great deals! Cut glass and silver plate, accent plates, and other fun pieces too.
Because our dinner table the night before had kind of a Romance theme, I continued that on the mantel. By cutting some cream and pale yellow roses from the garden, we had a lovely romantic feel!
Lying on the mantel, they were super soft and spelled Romance, Romance, Romance! Plus, they’ll dry in place and continue to be lovely – in a more permanent way!
If I’d wanted the look to stay fresh, I would have put them in some water tubes. You can get tubes at a florist or craft store, and the clear ones are hardly noticeable.
Draping some arching rose boughs along the mantel added even more to the romance.
All in all, the look reminded me a little of the Sleeping Beauty book I had as a child. It had twining roses and thorn canes on the cover. And since the princess wore a magical pink sparkle dress, I was truly enthralled! I loved that book so much, I think I still have it somewhere!
Crystal Candle Holders
In addition to the flower arrangements, I brought the candle holders over from the table too.
Because the room gets a lot of direct sun, the hanging chandelier crystals really sparkled through the afternoon.
I also added the cut glass votives from the night before. They’re another thrift shop find, and bring in even more shimmer.
With the exception of the roses from the store, we decorated SIL’s mantel completely with things she already had. You can definitely create a lovely mantel by shopping your own home. And since roses are available all year long, you can also have romance whenever you want it!
