Whenever anybody calls me matchy-matchy I just say “Thank You!” I admit – I LOVE a cohesive color scheme! I think it’s so calming and relaxing, and lately I’ve been doing it even more than usual, if that’s possible! When I set a table for dinner, for instance, I like my other decorations to harmonize or even match exactly!
So when I set my snowy white table a while ago, I also created the same effect on the mantel. When I talk about “matching,” I really mean keeping to the same colors and feel. If I have identical items, fine, but what I’m going for is the same vibe. No drastic changes of style or color. (Drastic changes of style or color can actually be really fun, but this time I’m looking for calmness and unity.)
Since the table was silver and white, I wanted matching silver and white on the mantel. This is a reasonably spare arrangement – a perfect example of Less is More. (I often do the More is More aesthetic, but in this case Less worked best!)
I put some of the extra greenery and white roses in this silver ice bucket. It matches the one in the dining room, but anything silver or white would have worked.
And silver candlesticks. I have four of these with the crystals – I love the way they sparkle and reflect the candlelight! I got the other pair just recently at a thrift shop.
Just like any other decorating element, they don’t all have to match exactly to create a unified look. In fact, I (and a lot of other people I know) think it’s more interesting if they don’t! There’s more texture that way, and it’s fun to appreciate the differences!
And nothing says Holidays like an evergreen wreath!
I had gotten this one at Trader Joe’s, and removed the large pine cones that were originally on it. The great thing about a naked evergreen wreath is you can do anything you want with it! Instead of the pine cone look, I wanted something soothing and simple and in my color scheme.
So I put in some seeded eucalyptus to give it a little bit of interest but no additional color. And then some white roses to match the ones on the table. Very simple. Very elegant.
Then I just stuck it up there on the mantel! (Well, I placed it gently in what I considered the perfect spot, being very careful not to squish it at the bottom!) The mirror was already there from a previous arrangement. I just moved it a few inches to accommodate my large flower bucket, and called it good!
When the sun went down we lit the candles, and the vibe changed. It was still white and bright, but softer, warmer, and less crisp. The flames danced, the crystals sparkled, and the room became a perfect place for cozy conversation!
And romantic pictures!
This post short & sweet!
Have fun creating your own matching decor – or not! Whatever makes you happy is the best decorating!
