I so love a warm creamy rich soup! Especially in the fall! And especially when it’s easy to make! Here’s a wonderful recipe for a creamy pumpkin soup that I served at our Halloween dinner last year. Check out this post to see the table setting it’s intended for.
This is a recipe I got from Emily Farris at Food & Wine online. You can get a printout of the recipe from the Members Library. CLICK HERE, and if you’re not a member yet, you can sign up when you get to the page.
I only made three very minor changes to the recipe – mostly because I didn’t have her actual ingredients on hand. I used salted butter instead of unsalted, chicken broth instead of vegetable, and heavy cream instead of creme fraiche. Probably a little more salt and a few more calories, but I figured it was worth it!
I’ll show you how easy this is to make. Here we go!
Here are the ingredients, all ready to use. I’ve always loved setting everything out like this – just like on the cooking shows!
The first thing is to chop up the onion. This one was really pungent and made me cry! But it made for a wonderful flavor in the soup!
Garlic was next. Notice the silicone garlic peeler – I LOVE this thing! It’s not only really handy, but fun too! If you haven’t used one before, you just stick a garlic clove in it, lay it down on the counter, roll it back and forth for a minute, then dump out your fully peeled clove! If the skin is really tight, you might give it a little whack before you start rolling.
Then you saute the onions in the butter until they just brown up a bit.
The recipe called for freshly-grated cinnamon and nutmeg, which is also kind of fun to do. And they smell so good – this was the first cinnamon of the season!
Then add the grated spices, the non-grated spices, the garlic, and the sugar.
Stir them all up and saute them for a couple minutes.
When the onion mixture is browned, add the pumpkin puree.
Broth next. It’s at about this point that I start getting hungry! It’s smelling so good, and it’s starting to look like soup!
So mix that all up, bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for a while.
After about 20 minutes, take the pot off the stove and add the cream.
Then set the pot aside to cool a bit. I put it on a rack to get more air circulation, but I could have put it directly on the counter. When we remodeled our kitchen years ago, we went with Richlite counter tops. (They look and act a lot like the old lab counters from high school science class!) We totally love them for a lot of reasons, but mostly because you can put hot things right on them! They’re safe up to 350 degrees, which is so nice – I can just set my hot pans right down.
But I digress.
After the soup is cooled a little, put it in the blender or food processor, and process until it’s smooth.
Once the soup is smooth, pour it back into the pan and reheat it.
Garnish with the dairy product of your choice. I thought about sour cream, which would have been good too, but I ended up going with just heavy cream. It was so fun making designs – or trying to make designs – with the cream. I’d love to learn how the baristas do it. A little sprinkle of cinnamon at the end was the final touch, and it was ready for the table!
And here’s our final product! This pumpkin soup was as delicious as promised. And this crispy white wine was perfect with it – Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.
If you like creamy delicious warm fall soups, I hope you get a chance to try this one! It’s an excellent recipe, and so fun and easy to make!
Bon Appetit!

Excellent! It’s a very subtle flavor, so if you guys really love pumpkin, you might want to put a tiny bit more pumpkin puree in it! 🙂 Can’t wait to hear how you like it!

A million years ago creamy pumpkin soup is the first soup I ever made for my wonderful new boyfriend. ♥ We met in October and I just love soup and love pumpkin soup done right. (Yours looks yum!) Anyway, I ended up marrying this wonderful man. So imagine my surprise when I found out he absolutely hates pumpkin and hates anything “creamy.” God bless him, he ate it and was so sweet. We to this day still laugh about that. We no longer EVER suffer in silence! Love is being honest. (And after years I guess love knows it is love even though we may not be a big fan of whatever one of us makes or bakes. )

Hi! I’m not a big pumpkin fan as a rule, but this soup is so perfect when it gets cool outside – I bet you’d love it! Funny you mention the soup bowls – they always make me smile. The story is that my mom asked for white soup bowls one year for Christmas. I bought her some plain white bowls that were really cereal bowls, but heck, WE would have served soup in them … She thanked me graciously, but told me that’s not the style she meant, and gave them back to me. (We still have them and use them all the time.) Then one day not long after, I was over at her house and she excitedly showed me these bowls – with their saucers – that she’d found at an antique shop, which she said were exactly what she’d wanted. Years later when we were clearing out her house, I found the original box, with everything still all wrapped in the original paper. After all that, she’d never even used them! 🤣 I just had to bring them home and put them into the rotation. Every time I use them – or even see them in the cupboard – I think of her! 💛 Oops – a longer story than I thought, but there you go! Hope all is well with you too my friend. Happy Pumpkin Season!
