The Mission District – 6 Cool Things to Do

The Mission District in San Francisco is totally quirky and fun!  The statisticians say it’s become a very hip neighborhood. And by “hip” they mean a high per capita number of coffee shops, vegan restaurants, vintage record stores, and tattoo parlors! And you’ll find boutique shops of all varieties.

Dolores Park in San Francisco from the top of the hill with the city skyline in the background.

I Love places like that!  We got to explore The Mission last summer when we flew down to San Francisco for a quick weekend. We went to our beautiful friend’s wedding reception, and got to visit my son who lives there.

Beautiful white marble mantel with large flower arrangement of lilies, with bowls of fruit, and cut glass port and sherry decanters on trays. Gold gilt mirror in the back.

Place Number One – Inn San Francisco

The gorgeous hotel Inn San Francisco was our home base in the Mission. We spent our free time mostly within walking distance.

The reddest bar ever - a glass of red wine & a shot of something on the bar, with a small lamp & lots of twinkle lights in the background.

Place Number Two – The Reddest Bar Ever!

Our son, an excellent tour guide, took us to some interesting lesser-known spots in the Mission District. Like this jazz bar – where everything is red. No kidding! Even the air feels red!  Drinks were good too!

Pirate Supply Store sigh in gold frame.

Place Number Three – The Pirate Supply Store

This place is hysterical!  I’m sure Johnny Depp must have shopped here before he made those movies. Even though I took a zillion pictures, I’ll try to share only a few.

Beautiful little neighborhood park, wrought iron fence and lots of green trees

Place Number Four – Neighborhood Parks

Number Four is really several places, because you can find lovely little spots like this one all over the Mission. And the big Dolores Park pictured at the top of this post, is the meeting place of the neighborhood.

Bright mural covering an entire building wall in the Mission District in San Francisco.

Place Number Five – The MaestraPeace Mural

Wow!  We turned a corner and there it was! This gorgeous mural is painted on the side of the Women’s Building on 18th. I had to join all the other people standing in the street taking pictures of it – it’s so amazing! As with parks, there are lots of beautiful murals all over the Mission District.

The dessert case at Tartine Bakery! Beautiful pastries on glass shelves.

Place Number Six – Tartine Bakery

And speaking of gorgeous, one of San Francisco’s famous bakeries, Tartine is worth waiting in line for! Fortunately we didn’t actually have to wait in line – we were thrilled! Have you been to the Mission?  What were your favorite spots?

Let’s talk in the Comments!

I love San Francisco, but honestly don’t think I have even been to the Mission District. It does not look familiar to me, but it does look really fun! I will check it out during my next visit, hopefully with my family. Thanks for the tips on fun places to visit!

Hi Denise! So glad you like the post. I love the Mission District, and I want to try some other places in San Francisco too. Hope you do get to visit again soon – it would be funny if we were both there at the same time! 🙂 Take care, and thanks for stopping by!
